It’s called pandiculation. Have you ever closely watched a cat or dog get up off the couch, put her paws out, and lengthen herself first on one side of her body and then on the other? It looks like a stretch, but it’s not. The animal is pandiculating. She’s lengthening entire muscle groups while retaining a bit of tension at the same time. Animals actively lengthen from a contraction. They look as if they’re doing a full-body yawn. What they do is built-in, automatic, and they do this every time they get up from rest—sometimes up to forty-two times a day!

I tried to figure out why my knee was bothering me. I became an expert of sorts regarding my own knees! After about eight months of annoying pain—which didn’t disrupt my life; it was simply bothersome—I decided to go to an orthopedist. The conversation went something like this: The doctor entered the treatment room, chart in hand. Before examining me, he said, “Ah, knee problems. " ME: Fifty. DOCTOR: Oh, fifty. Well, you probably have arthritis. ME: Really? How did that happen? DOCTOR: That’s just what happens at fifty.

Eventually the pain in my hip went away and I thought I was back to normal. I did begin to notice, however, that I couldn’t sit cross-legged quite as well as I’d been able to, and that getting up off the floor caused my left knee to hurt. I did what I taught others to do, and practiced my somatic movements every day. I tried to figure out why my knee was bothering me. I became an expert of sorts regarding my own knees! After about eight months of annoying pain—which didn’t disrupt my life; it was simply bothersome—I decided to go to an orthopedist.
