To keep the cameras warm during high-altitude flying and thus improve their efficiency, the wing gun heating system was modified to suit. (Big Bird Aviation Collection) Having proved that the Spitfire could reach Germany and carry out its allotted task, the decision was taken to extend the type's range even further. Given that placing fuel in the rear fuselage would play havoc with the C of G range, attention turned to the one unused space in the airframe - the wing leading edge. Development work on the new type began in early 1940 when the PDU in consultation with Supermarine took over an aircraft on the production line and started the modifications required to produce the long-range reconnaissance Spitfire.
VB and the later Mk. Vc. (Chris Michell) In order to reduce the extraneous weight of the Spitfire the armament was reduced to a pair of machine guns. Upon arrival in Malta each aircraft was stripped of its modification kit and the required armament 44 and tropical filter was fitted. This particular assembly was modified by engineers at No. 103 MU, Aboukir, who managed to reduce the size of the original after diligent efforts. Although it was ::,maller it WARBIRDTECH ---- was found to be just as effective.
V it was deemed time for other units overseas to receive the new aircraft. V was the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations for missions over Egypt, Libya, and Malta. Prior to despatching any aircraft overseas, trials were undertaken on a UK-based aircraft, X4922, in an effort to filter out the major problem in the region - dust. The answer was seen as a large dust filter fairing under the aircraft's nose. Although efficient, the size of the fairing caused a reduction in ram air pressure to the carburetor pressure which in turn reduced the aircraft's top speed by about 8 mph.
