Athletic Stance Although medicine ball exercises can be performed in different positions, most exercises start from the standing “athletic” stance. Before beginning a medicine ball training program, participants should take the time to review the characteristics of the athletic stance to reduce the likelihood of injury and enhance training adaptations. Sometimes a mirror can be a useful visual aid for teaching the athletic stance. Characteristics of the athletic stance are listed in Table 3-2 and illustrated in Figure 3-23.

The choice of exercise, order of exercise, weight used, number of sets, rest periods between sets and exercises, and exercise speed are program variables that contribute to the design of a medicine ball training session. The key to safe and effective medicine ball training is qualified instruction and proper program design. Since children and adolescents will respond differently to the same training program, sound decisions must be based on an understanding of exercise science as well as an appreciation of each child’s individual needs and abilities.
