Four of Taft’s pieces had been brought back from Paris and made during his last weeks there: the thoughtful portrait of Dr. McAll, the founder and director of the Protestant mission, which was such an important part of Taft’s life in Paris; the half-life-size plaster figure of Molly Pitcher, which he had intended for the Salon of 1886 but which had not been completed in time to be submitted to the jury; the little marble head of a young girl (chapter 1), which he had carved with his own hands as a technical exercise; and a statuette of the Prodigal Son that he had modeled while his friend Robert Bringhurst was working on the same subject.
