Fender bender. You never know what you’ll see in the gutters of New York City, and when I came upon this (see here) while walking to the subway one morning, I couldn’t help but try to decode the story: a yellow taxi hit another car, or vice versa, and this was the residue. It was not as if I was at the scene of the accident—the source of it was long gone, or otherwise not in evidence. But the conclusions to be drawn from the colors, the materials, the shattered bits, were undeniable. I’ve lived in the city long enough to know that insurance numbers were definitely exchanged.
Good morning. I look at my tongue in the mirror every morning, and if it’s not black, I’m good to go. If it is black, it usually means I had red wine the night before, and I brush it thoroughly. If I didn’t have red wine, I call the doctor. But seriously, a good look at your face in the morning can tell you all kinds of things: about your health, your mood, and how you will appear to everyone you meet for the rest of the day. Adjust accordingly. You don’t have to be a narcissist—you just have to pay a little attention.
They don’t actually exist, but other African brands certainly do, so I visited smoke shops around the neighborhood of the United Nations building in New York to see what the packaging of these brands looked like (this was before the Internet existed). I borrowed several elements from them to make this cover: warm colors, linear geometry, an airplane, retro lettering, and gold foil across the top. The small strip of mathematical symbols over the plane is a reference to the main character’s husband’s job as a numerical theoretician (which eventually drives him mad).
