In 2008, I wrote a belated sequel, tracing the pessimistic inverse of this story, featuring a comparable and more or less enforced exodus from television, not just of ex-academics and cultural workers like myself, but also of independent filmmakers, and many of those with radical or even traditional public service ambitions for the medium (Kerr 2008). The two programme categories, arts and history, in which I worked as a programme-maker both fall, institutionally, into what is often referred to by broadcasters nowadays as specialist factual, though both history and music and arts were their own relatively independent commissioning departments when I started working in television.

As the two groups become closer out of both commercial and academic necessity, these preconceptions are beginning to lessen somewhat. Mateer (2015) argues that the gradual shifts in perception between academia and industry is also partly a result of the increasing number of media personnel moving from industry to academia—a factor that Paul Kerr will also extensively elaborate on in his case study later in this chapter. Indeed, because of the previously discussed changes in universities, UK academics now find themselves in closer contact with media practitioners than ever before.
