Children need time, lots of time, especially early on. As each year passes, they need less of our time but may start demanding more of society's substitute—cash. That's a poor trade-off. When our children are young, we should take off our watches and give them all the time in the world. When our children go to school, we can put our watches back on and give them a small allowance. Parents who try to replace themselves with their wallets or what the wallet contents can buy are deluding themselves; this isn't parenting and it's not what our kids need.

In fact, they need us to be dull as dishwater. They want us to drive them in the car, tell the appropriate cornyjokes, nag them about eating vegetables and otherwise behave like Ward and June Cleaver. When parents become too interesting, we can overwhelm our kids and really interfere with their growing up. Parents who are interesting all the time—Hollywood stars, borderline psychotics and intense artistic folks, for example—tend to produce unhappy, maladjusted children. One need only look at the biographies of Gloria Vanderbik, Mackenzie Phillips and Carrie Fisher to see the fate of such kids.

It does mean having a goal that Sally will become an honest, confident, competent and caring adult. It also means, ironically, having some respect for whatever kind of person Sally starts to become. Goals that are reasonable have to be connected to the real child, not to some failed goal of our own. Some parents, unfortunately, push goals on their kids far too aggressively and the results backfire. For every Earl Woods—who gave baby Tiger a golf club to hold in his crib and spent twenty more years nurturing his son to golfing stardom—there are too many other parents who have simply pushed their kids into drugs, depression or personal destruction.
