Due to tidal flooding these marshes have never been reclaimed for intensive farming so stretching from Silloth you have Skinburness, Border, Newton, Cardurnock and Campfield Marsh before Bowness and Burgh and Rockcliffe and arrival at Carlisle. The main grazing animals are sheep and cattle, all removed when high tides come to the area. The outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 2001 left the marshes ungrazed for a period of time, allowing some plant species to flourish, especially sea pink, scurvy grass and sea aster.
Edward I’s monument is found here, erected after his death in 1307 as his armies used to cross into Scotland from this point. His nickname was Longshanks, so it is appropriate that he has a link with the redshanks and greenshanks on this marsh. Rockcliffe Marsh can also be viewed from this point but closer views can be had from the Old Boat House at NY230628 or along the footpath at NY353619. The marsh itself is a Cumbria Wildlife Trust reserve and permits are needed to enter the site. Other marshes can be scanned from roads: Skinburness Marsh at NY137547 and Border Marsh at NY152523.
Both herring and blackheaded gull are found all year round, with lesser black-backed gull in summer and common gull in winter. Great black-backed gull can be found feeding on dead salmon in late autumn. Winter sees both woodcock and snipe feeding around the Lonning, along with goosander, cormorant and goldeneye on the river. Otters love this section of the river and can be seen during daylight hours, especially in winter. Mink are not as common as they used to be and it has been suggested that the increasing otter population has helped to reduce their numbers.
