By Stephen Barber
Taking as its topic the "intricately assembled, relentlessly disassembling metropolitan screen", it charts the virulent implosions of tradition, the distortions and violence that provide city-living its fractured and hallucinatory quality.
Provocatively written as a chain of inter-locking poetic fragments, the textual content conjures up the formation of metropolitan "identity" because it ricochets among the actual floor of the town and the susceptible yet manipulating realization of urban dwellers.
Barber has came upon a strong new vocabulary – a vocabulary charged with the visible and sonic effect of the cinema. just like the urban, the textual content pulsates, creatively chaotic, uncooked and exhilarating.

The cruel and obtuse stubbornness of postwar German cinema disintegrated with the death of Fassbinder. And, worst of all, the contemporary transformations of the European city have slipped through the violent seizure of Fassbinder's vision, at the essential moment when their movement into manic overdrive would have benefited from the incisive, deadly wildness of Fassbinder's vision. The city unleashes its own imagery and its own internal friction; it pursues itself as a jarred and startled behemoth of imagery, insistently pounding, shattering and reformulating itself.
The reconstituted street gangs of Europe possess a homogeneity that is staggering. The suburban housing blocks are crammed to overspill, jettisoning their young into the dirt outside, surrounded by marshland and sewerage pipes, exposed to the uniquely drained light of the suburbs which overilluminates every last detail of the inhabitants' lives. The suburbs pulse with congested blood at the neural interstice between the European cities and the outer space which is not a city; the street gangs embody that moment of traversal between chaos and the void, snatching at any appropriating identity or imagery that will constitute a presence in the streets.
Whatever is inscribed upon the city is vulnerable to reaction, response. Words on the city imply an equilibrium of text with history, text with human inhabitation of the city- and such an equity cannot be negotiated in the volatile, visual arena of the city. One imprinting on the city's surface is constantly exchanged for another, which may expand or cancel the original inscription. Every new imagery of the city instantly becomes the origin of the city, momentarily, before its replacement. The original, definitive and authentic city is reversed into the obsolete city with stunning speed.
