Having to resurrect college sketches was bad enough, but there was not even the consolation of critical appreciation for the more recent efforts. One of the newer stories, "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz" (written in October 1921) was very good indeed, but Fitzgerald had experienced repeated rejection in marketing it and eventually had to settle for publication in The Smart Set.
