The abandonment of subject-based politics is a scary prospect for modernist feminists. Modernist feminist theories generally tell the story that the postmodern deconstruction of the subject of woman threatens women's ability to claim rights on behalf of themselves and other women. This is an appalling prospect for modernists of any persuasion because they believe that the installation of the dignity, worth and authority of the human individual opened up the way for a whole swathe of emancipatory demands leading to all sorts of wonderful bene®ts.

They have a different view of what counts as a useful or authentic practice of women's agency than do liberal feminists. For example, some radical feminists call for a halt to prenatal screening practices because the latter have emerged from patriarchal science, technology and medicine, rather than asking for assistance in using these services more rationally. They might argue that such technologies are practised on women's bodies merely to satisfy patriarchal needs for `healthy' offspring in order to carry forward the male name as well as buttressing the system of compulsory heterosexuality.

We may argue about them and disagree about who and what should be included, but for modernists, there are real and true principles of justice to be discovered `out there'. We simply have to get them right. This idea of `getting it right' is both important and integral to modernist and Cartesian thought. It is important because it is connected to ideas about the truth. And the truth is important because modernists believe that the truth can set us free (from injustice, domination, lies, 36 Feminism after postmodernism oppression and so on).
