Most music halls used posters to advertise their shows. One hundred years later, the shows are forgotten, but some of their posters can still be appreciated. One poster that was created as an ad is Henri Toulouse-Lautrec's Jane Avril at the Jardin de Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec was a painter, but he also created more than 30 posters. These advertisements were plastered on buildings throughout Paris and were seen by nearly everyone. Their clean lines, large, flat areas of color, and brisk design made them popular and eye-catching.
The Battle of Constantine is one of a series of pictures that Piero Della Francesca painted on the walls of a church in Italy. This painting shows an important battle in which Constantine gained power and became a friend of the Christians. The story is told that the night before this battle, Constantine had a dream. In the dream, a voice told him to place the symbol of Christ on his shield. "By this sign you shall conquer," was the promise. Constantine did as he was instructed, and he won the battle.
