While exercising, you will inevitably be bombarded with a barrage of thoughts and stimuli, which will make it hard to keep your focus. This is sometimes known as “Monkey Mind”—you jump around from thought to thought like a monkey jumps from tree to tree. You’re all over the place! This is okay. Simply bring your attention back to your breathing and begin again. Try to train your monkey to sit still for a bit. Allow him to rest in one tree, while you move on with your workout. He’s an excitable monkey though, so you’re likely to repeat this cycle over and over as you’re working out.

Now don’t start getting defensive over there. The idea that you (and only you) are responsible for your own circumstances is not something to fear. It is actually an incredibly empowering concept once you put it into practice. If this sounds harsh, remember that you’re at a place now where every fit person has been: the beginning. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve never been to the gym or never run any farther than the mailbox. If you haven’t, that’s fine—this book will help you. If personal fitness is something you’ve been working on but you just need help focusing—this book will help you.

My answer is always the same: listen to your body. One of the main reasons why it is essential to be in tune with your body during your workout is so you can effectively gauge how much you can handle on any given day. Some people enter the gym with a preconceived plan of what they want to do that day. This is a great idea, but you must also be ready to make spontaneous adjustments based on what your body is telling you. If you are watching TV or too concerned with being seen at the gym (or seeing others), you may be missing the big picture.
