Having already changed my mind a few times about what I wanted to do, I was interested. And if this test (obviously put together by people who knew what they were about) was going to help me sort any of that out – well, great. As a five-year-old, I had wanted to be a doctor (I think that was when my dad had become an ambulance driver). But, fairly quickly, I remembered that I didn’t like blood very much, and moreover, realised that doctors had to be really intelligent. Being reasonably good at sums, and always loving being outside, I then thought, again encouraged by my father, that perhaps I’d be a surveyor working out where roads should go through the bush, and measuring everything.

But not quite the same… This time, there was no Ganny welcoming me with hot scones fresh from the oven and jam and cream on the table, no great strawberry-blonde head of hair with combs stuck all over the place, no round, soft cheeks and laughing eyes, no more bold orange pattern swirling on white skirt … There was no more Ganny, smelling of good things to eat. indd 25 M A L L A C O O TA t o M E L B O U R N E [ 25 ] 26/10/10 2:23 PM TJ251-6-2010 IMUK AUS0323 Drawn from the heart W:170mm X H:232mm 150L EX100 W/F Rhodamine/Magenta(v) Cyan Magenta Yellow Black 25 Cyan Magenta Yellow Black TJ251-6-2010 IMUK AUS0323 Drawn from the heart W:170mm X H:232mm 150L EX100 W/F Rhodamine/Magenta(v) 26 parents) lived in their old house just out of town.

We won’t have much time to help you, with all the rest of our teaching. ’ Amazing, when I think back on it now. I rounded up some mates, who probably thought it was going to be a damn good bludge, and they all signed up. At the ripe old age of just sixteen, I would be running my own art course. My family – Mum, Dad, John, Ted, Tess and Gilbert, now about ten years old – moved to Melbourne, and I went back to live with Nanna and Pop, whom I adored, in their old house just out of Paynesville. But my so-called art course became, predictably enough, a bit silly, a bit of a farce.
