Look for ways to eliminate sitting from your leisure time, too. We certainly aren’t suggesting that you stand at the dinner table. But because sitting on the floor is better than sitting on a couch, consider watching TV on the ground or using your couch as a platform and not a chair. When you sit on the floor, you can spend time stretching, squatting, or working on your mobility. It’s how we watch TV in our household, and we highly recommend it. It’s an easy way to kill two birds with one stone.

But by that point, many such injuries are more difficult to fix. Our goal is to teach you how to perform some very basic movements properly so you can avoid catastrophic breakdowns. And, more important, if you do most of your sitting at work or at school, you certainly don’t have to let those hours negatively impact the other hours of your life. In recent years, a segment of the population has caught on to this concept; in many businesses and schools, movement is promoted constantly. While these efforts are certainly beneficial, a key element is still missing: the element of moving properly.

For nearly 200,000 years, Homo sapiens spent the majority of their time on the move. If they wanted something to eat, they had to hunt for it or dig it up out of the ground. If they wanted to travel, they had to get there by foot. All the movement that surrounded survival might sound exhausting to us now, but that activity shaped our bodies’ design, both internally and externally. Our bodies are built for movement, and in turn movement keeps our bodies healthy. It is a symbiotic relationship that has allowed our species to survive.
