What the operator needs is a 360-degree view of the customer. Data from the production systems and/or data warehouse won’t provide such a view because it probably only contains structured data coming from the production systems. What is needed is data from all kinds of data sources and combined, ranging from data coming from unstructured to structured sources and coming from internal to external sources. Being able to show a full picture of a specific concept is called 360-degree reporting. In most cases, 360-degree reporting is done on the lowest level of detail.

4 The Operational Data Store Whether data is coming from production systems or from a data staging area, it has to be processed (integrated, transformed, cleansed) before it can be loaded into the data warehouse (or data marts). But there might be other IT systems interested in this integrated, transformed, and cleansed version of the data. For example, the organization’s website might want to access the data in an integrated fashion, and the same might apply for a master data management system and a customer relationship system.
