To shed light on this question, we will now review the empirical research on welfare measurement and policy evaluation specifically using the capability approach.

6 Conclusions In this chapter we have characterised and analysed the capability approach from the perspective of standard welfare economics. We have argued that the capability approach offers profound critiques of the underlying assumptions of the standard welfare economic model. Taking on board these critiques can be done in two ways. Either one modifies the standard economic model to account for non-market goods and services, public and rationed goods, externalities, interpersonal heterogeneity and the intrinsic value of choice.
