We found it in the Ecrins National Park. At 4,102m, the Barre des Écrins towers over the two-mile long Glacier Blanc (White Glacier), beside which the Refuge des Écrins provides an overnight base. The Barre itself sports a difficult summit ridge that was beyond our capabilities but, next to it, across a shallow col, no more than a shoulder really, was the rounded top of the 4,015m Dôme de Neige des Écrins. Even the name appealed. The Snow Dome. And so it came to pass that, one morning in the summer of 1982, with a mixture of trepidation and excitement, Christine and I set off from our valley campsite near the village of Ailefroide to embark on the great adventure.
It was the last I was to see of it for some time. Whitney Portal lies at the foot of a craggy, forested, claustrophobic basin low down on the mountain, and the trail first has to work its convoluted way up out of that basin. In easy-angled switchbacks in the early morning shade of pinyon pines, it climbed steadily past Lone Pine Lake and Mirror Lake to emerge at the lovely meadow known as Trail Camp. It was not until here, a whole 3,680ft above the Portal, that the huge rock wall that forms the east face of Whitney and its satellites burst into view with spectacular suddenness.
Above the switchbacks lay Garden Creek and, like so many others who passed this way, I plunged into its cool, refreshing waters. Again, it was a difficult spot to leave, but at least it wasn’t far now to Indian Gardens, back on the Tonto Plateau, where Garden Creek Springs erupted from the rock to irrigate the parched land. The gardens are a true oasis in the desert and were once farmed by Havasupai Indians, who still live in the canyon further downriver. Today there are toilets, a ranger station and a campground.
